sure, most of us are aware of how damaging uv rays can be and are willing to slather on an unholy amount of sunscreen on our skin (even in this sweltering heat),, but how about our hair?

to begin with, not many of us are familiar with the effects of uv rays on our hair.

uv rays can destroy the protein bonds and melanin in our hair, and overtime may lead to the loss of moisture from the hair. too much exposure to the sun can compromise the structural integrity of the hair strand, causing brittle hair. and for those who enjoy going to the beach?? sodium from the sea can actually accelerate the process of melanin loss.

melanin (both in the skin and hair) serves as a medium to absorb and scatter uv rays, and can be said to be a shield for the cells underneath.

it’ll be ideal to use some form of hair product with spf for protection, but of course, uv damage will not be completely negated. prevention paired with aftercare will be the most optimal combination to maintain the integrity of your hair.
