6 Tips for a Healthy Scalp

Tip 1: Establish a Proper Cleansing Routine

For a healthy scalp, wash your hair every two to three days. If you wash your hair more often, you’re at risk of drying out your scalp. Washing your hair less often than three to four times per week can cause an unhealthy buildup of oil and dirt on your scalp, which can clog follicles and may slow hair growth.

Always use a gentle shampoo that won’t strip natural oils from your scalp, helping to prevent dryness.

Tip 2: Eliminate Flakes

Dandruff is a tell-tale sign that your scalp needs some TLC. And a distressed scalp may grow brittler and more unmanageable hair. If you notice dandruff in your hair or on your clothing, talk to your doctor about using a scalp treatment specially formulated to clear up dandruff.

Tip 3: Exfoliate Regularly

You exfoliate your skin to keep it healthy, so why should your scalp be any different? By regularly exfoliating the dead skin cells from your scalp, you can help keep your follicles clear and give your hair its best chance to grow.

Make sure to brush your hair daily with a natural bristle brush to invigorate blood circulation on the scalp, redistribute scalp oils, and slough off dead skin and debris that can obstruct healthy hair growth. When shampooing, gently massage your scalp with your fingertips to remove dead skin and promote blood flow. Once a month, use an exfoliating mask. Look for one at your local beauty store or make your own by adding sugar to a small amount of your regular shampoo. (Hint: Before trying a DIY mask, do a skin test first to check for allergies. If your skin is sensitive to the mask, don’t apply it to your scalp.)

4: Add Conditioner

Most people avoid putting conditioner on their scalp because they don’t want to weigh down their hair or they think it’ll make their scalp oilier. But if your scalp is dry, you’ll definitely want to condition it after shampooing. It’s a bit like moisturizing your face after washing it!

Just be sure to use a lightweight conditioner.

Tip 5: Sun Protection

UV rays from the sun can damage your scalp skin and exacerbate hair thinning. And the less hair you have, the greater the risk of UV damage. When you’re outside for prolonged periods of time, make sure to wear a hat or apply a sunscreen specially formulated for scalp protection.

Tip 6: Examine Your Diet

For the best hair and scalp possible, you must incorporate foods for healthy hair and scalp into your diet. Think lean proteins, healthy fats, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

If you suffer from scalp dryness, you may want to supplement your diet with Omega-3’s and fish oils. Both can help provide your skin with more moisture, including your scalp. Talk to your doctor about which supplements will work best for you to promote a healthy, moisturized scalp.
