A necessity for beautiful hair, Cuticles, what are they?

Advice for your hair from a professional hairstylist.

We often see the word "Cuticles" appear in advertisements for Hair care products or TV commercials. While many see Cuticles as a sign of beautiful hair, they are also many that don't understand what they are. Let us introduce their role and ways we can support them for beautiful hair.

Cuticles are thin membrane like cells that cover the surface of your hair. If you look through a microscope, they would look like fish scales.

Cuticles bring out shine on the surface and act as a barrier that protects your hair from the outside. Furthermore, it also prevents the moisture and proteins inside your hair from being lost to the surroundings. For healthy hair, the cuticles tightly overlay each other in a scale-like manner. As it receives shock from the outside and becomes damaged, the cuticles start to peel and become rough. Cuticles that have started to peel cannot be closed back again.

While the cuticles are the protective layer outside the hair, they have several weaknesses

Friction caused by brushing or towel drying. If the hair is toweled or brushed too excessively, especially when the hair is damp and the cuticle are open, it can damage the cuticles

Heat from direct sunlight, UV rays or Blow dryer. If you concentrate heat on the same area for a period of time, the keratin that form the cuticles will become deformed and cause  the cuticles to peel

This refers to services such as Colouring and Perming. The chemicals used in perms and colours open the cuticles to penetrate into the hair. Repeated colouring or perms will thus increase the damage level.

How to protect your cuticles.

- Go gentle when towel drying or brushing to reduce the friction created

- Avoid focusing the heat of the dryer on one spot

- Colour or perm your hair only when the need arises to reduce the damage done

The first thing is to reduce the burden on your hair by doing the above and you will be on your way to achieving beautiful hair.

Once the cuticle has peeled, it cannot be regenerated but it is possible to repair the damaged portions.

Once you start feeling that your hair is dry or damaged, use damage care shampoo and treatment to provide nutrients for the cuticles and care for them.
